Becoming a Dental Nurse

About the role

The role of a dental nurse is important in a dental clinic. They are responsible in preparing & maintaining dental equipment and materials. They are also responsible for health & safety regulations as well as providing chair-side support to dentists, therapists & hygienists. They also can provide admin duties such as making appointments & dealing with paperwork.

Totally! When you enrol with us, you’ll be eligible to work inside any UK dental surgery as this is a requirement to obtaining your diploma.

While iCare Dental Nurse students are training, they’ll be working and getting paid as trainee Dental Nurses. 

You will need to have completed a diploma course at a dental hospital to qualify as a dental therapist. The course is full time and spans a little more than 2 years. Minimum requirements for applicants to courses are a Dental Nursing certificate from a recognised institution or 2 A-levels.

Once you are ready to enrol for the Regulated Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing (RQF), your trainer will advise you when the best time is to start applying. It’s crucial to get familiar with specific topics in the diploma first.  Normally, it takes 1-2 months since starting your diploma to then be ready to apply for work experience. 

Unfortunately, as a training provider, we can’t guarantee jobs or placements. However, and this is a BIG however, we do provide 100% support to build your CV and your profile to make sure it meets the Dental Nursing specs. 

We are passionate about our students, and always root for success. Mock interviews and 1-2-1 sessions are available once you’re ready to apply for jobs. Vacancies tend to arise from partnering practices and clinics in Manchester and surrounding areas. We are always in the loop of available vacancies, so you’re in safe hands! 

  1. When you enrol on the course, you’re expected to maintain at least 80% attendance 
  2. You’ll need to begin your placement within 3 months and are advised to also work on completing your Portfolio of Evidence
    within a specific timeframe. 
  3. Once you have successfully completed your Portfolio of Evidence, which is online-based, you start to prepare for the written exam. 
  4. Once you have successfully passed your written exam, you proceed to conduct the OSCE exam, which is normally 2-3 months after. 
  5. After you have completed these, you will finally have the title of a Dental Nurse. 
  6. You then apply to go on the GDC registration.

Once you obtain your Regulated Level 3 Diploma in Dental Nursing (RQF), we go through the recruitment & mentoring journey with you to help find you work and ‘further post qualifications’.

We believe in providing the best guidance and therefore you’ll be trained by experienced dental nurses. 

The diploma for Dental Nursing is split into 2 parts. 

  1. A written exam which you will need to pass to process to next stage. 
  2. A practical OSCE exam – we go through mock sessions to help prepare.

You are also required to complete your Portfolio of Evidence. (which is online based).  

The Requirements

We require a literacy and Numeracy test. 

You can usually work as a trainee dental nurse without academic qualifications but, to progress to being a qualified dental nurse, you will need to study for a course in dental nursing, either part or full time, that is approved by the General Dental Council.

Tetanus, diphtheria, polio, MMR (routine vaccinations). Hepatitis B (a requirement for staff who come into contact with body fluids and blood during their work or there is a risk from sharps injury or splashes such as handling clinical waste).

The GDC is the General Dental Council, who aim to protect patients within the United Kingdom by regulating dental staff, assuring the quality of dental education and setting standards for conduct that all dental professionals must adhere to.

It is a legal requirement that all dentists, dental nurses, dental technicians, clinical dental technicians, dental hygienists, dental therapists and orthodontic therapists must be registered with the GDC in order to work in the United Kingdom. Dental nurses, dental technicians, clinical dental technicians, dental hygienists, dental hygienists and dental therapists are known as Dental Care Professionals (DCPs).
